Unity Foundation of La Porte County announced that its founding president, Maggi Spartz, will retire at the end of 2025. Under Spartz’s visionary leadership and tireless efforts, the Unity Foundation has grown from nothing to over $50 million in assets, benefiting thousands of people and hundreds of LaPorte County organizations.

“In 1992, an opportunity presented by the Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment Inc. to start a community foundation grew into a thriving and impactful organization. Building the Unity Foundation from scratch and transforming La Porte County and the region has been the honor of my lifetime,” said Spartz. “I am so proud of what we have accomplished together!”

Spartz’s passion for La Porte County and the region over 33 years has been unmatched. She is known for closely listening to donors and uncovering people’s passions for causes they care about. She invested time and energy unifying the county and region and being a champion for innovation, leadership and entrepreneurship.

Jon Gilmore, Chairman of the Unity Foundation board of directors, said, “Maggi has been the heart and soul of our foundation for over 33 years. Under her extraordinary leadership, Unity has grown exponentially, touching countless lives in our community. Her unwavering dedication and visionary guidance have established a lasting legacy. While we will deeply miss her day-to-day presence, we celebrate her much-deserved retirement and wish her all the best in this next adventure of her life.”

Spartz’s key achievements since 1992:

Raised $55 million in Unity directly plus $23 million in indirect grants.

Awarded nearly $29 million in grants and scholarships, benefiting residents, non-profits, colleges and employers.

Strengthened local nonprofits by building endowment funds and providing grants.

Founded and nurtured numerous collaborations that have impacted housing, prevented homelessness, enhanced community leadership, promoted youth development, protected the environment, and supported education and arts and culture.

Inspired donors and professional advisors to understand the “miracle of Endowment,” think long term and make planned gifts, founded the Gold Key Society.

Represented La Porte County on the regional, state and national stage.

Managed 350 funds that reflect the goals and values of the donors who started them, forever connecting them with causes they care about now and for generations to come.

Improved educational attainment through scholarships and initiatives that supported students and families, attracting $18 million from the Lilly Endowment for education and literacy programs that reached over 67,000 learners in La Porte, Lake, and Porter Counties.

Manage the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship program awarding full tuition scholarships to 73 students for more than totaling $6 Million since 1998. Many students call La Porte County and Indiana home.

Acted as an essential connector for projects such as Unity Park, Vibrant Communities of La Porte County and Michigan City, pandemic responses, the STAR Center coworking space for nonprofits, the Trail Creek Watershed Partnership, NWI BIZHub, the Home Team, the Society of Innovators, and Ignite the Region economic development efforts.

Successfully met all seven challenge matches presented by the Lilly Endowment, Inc.

Grew Unity’s staff from one to six full-time members. Hosted several interns.

Cultivating and mentoring aspiring leaders through Leadership La Porte County and providing effective facilitation for complex problems toward workable solutions.

The Unity Foundation’s board of directors will initiate a succession plan and comprehensive search for the next president starting in January 2025. The goal is to celebrate Spartz’s legacy and have a new leader on board by the end of 2025. The board is dedicated to sustaining momentum and honoring Spartz’s legacy, ensuring a smooth and transparent leadership transition.

The Unity Foundation of La Porte County is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for La Porte County – Colton Barnes, South Central Jr-Sr High School and Bailey Chavis, Michigan City High School. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are known for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership.

“Bailey and Colton embody the spirit of community, true leadership, and perseverance that the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship seeks to honor. Colton impressed the Scholarship Committee with his dedication to community service, particularly with his role in the Shine the Light Project, which creates inclusive opportunities in theater for people of all abilities, and his leadership in various school organizations like Robotics and National Honor Society. His passion for nursing and serving others reflects his commitment to making a meaningful impact in the world.  Meanwhile, Bailey showcased extraordinary leadership as a student government officer, class president, and athlete across multiple sports. Her work as a student commissioner for Michigan City’s Sustainability Commission and as a volunteer at Tannehill Soup Kitchen highlights her dedication to improving her community and addressing critical issues like food insecurity. Both Bailey and Colton are shining examples of the positive change young leaders can achieve,”  said CC Payne, Director of Operations at Unity Foundation.

Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides for full tuition, required fees and a special allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and required equipment for four years. The scholarship is for full-time undergraduate students leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars may also participate in the Lilly Scholars Network (LSN), which connects both current scholars and alumni with resources and opportunities to be active leaders on their campuses and in their communities. Both the scholarship program and LSN are supported by grants from Lilly Endowment to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and Indiana Humanities.

In determining La Porte County’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholar nominees, consideration was given to Service, Academics, and Activities by the Unity Foundation Scholarship Committee,  After the field of applicants was narrowed down, nominees were submitted to ICI, the statewide administrator of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program, which approves the final selection of scholarship recipients.

Maggi Spartz, Unity Foundation President shares “The Unity Foundation staff and volunteers invest a lot of time reviewing the applications, choosing and interviewing the finalists in person.  The scores are tallied the two highest scores are referred to ICI.  The quality of the candidates make this task very hard, yet makes us all proud of what our high school students are achieving!”

Lilly Endowment created the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program for the 1997-98 school year. Since then, grant funding in excess of $490 million has supported more than 5,300 Indiana students who have received scholarships through the program.

The primary purposes of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program are: 1) to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana; 2) to increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities; and 3) to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business, governmental, educational, nonprofit and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state.

LA PORTE COUNTY, IN — Unity Foundation of La Porte County is pleased to recognize 10 local high school seniors as La Porte County finalists for the prestigious Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. Two of the finalists will be selected as 2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholars. The two scholars will each receive a full-tuition scholarship to pursue a baccalaureate degree at any accredited public or private Indiana college or university and an annual book and equipment stipend. The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program has provided approximately $6 million in tuition and book stipends to benefit 74 La Porte County students since 1998.

“This year’s finalists are a truly remarkable group of young adults. They have strong grades, are involved in many activities and have already provided service to their communities.  Their futures are bright and we hope they will continue to give back to their communities,” said Maggi Spartz, Unity Foundation President.

The finalists and their respective schools are:

  • Colton Barnes, South Central Jr-Sr High School
  • Drew Bush, La Porte High School
  • Bailey Chavis, Michigan City High School
  • Abbas Hakim, La Porte High School
  • Wyatt Keller, New Prairie High School

  • Jayde Pryor, Tri-Township Jr./ Sr. High School
  • Katherine Sheerin, Marquette Catholic High School

A committee of local volunteers reviewed the applications in a blind process.  Finalists were selected based on their academic achievement, service to others, extracurricular activities and, to a lesser extent, financial need.  The committee then interviewed each of the finalists. Nominees and alternate names will be submitted to the Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc., the statewide administrator of the program, for the final selection – which will be announced in December. As a reward for their achievements, the remaining finalists will receive a $2,000 scholarship from the Unity Foundation.

The primary purposes of the program are: 1) to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana; 2) to increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities; and 3) to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business, governmental, educational, nonprofit and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state.

Leadership La Porte County celebrated 40 years of impact this year. Led by Executive Director Monica Komasinski, the organization aims to inspire, develop, cultivate, and connect emerging and existing leaders to serve their diverse communities. Unity Foundation has been a champion of Leadership La Porte County since Unity’s early days.

The Leadership La Porte County Endowment Fund, held at Unity Foundation, provides annual support to the organization. Robert J. Hiler, Jr. generously donated to this fund after it was established in 1996, and he provided significant support through a bequest upon his passing. Thanks to his contributions and the gifts of many others, Leadership La Porte County will receive this funding annually…forever.

The Adult Community Leadership Program is geared toward community engagement, team building, community knowledge, leadership skill development and networking. Class sessions take place one day per month from September through May. Unity Foundation believes so strongly in this program that our staff members are graduates!

Multiple youth programs build on skills, ideas, and energy of local youth to improve the community through service-led projects, to promote learning through youth service, to develop youth leadership skills, to promote civic participation and to encourage youth to develop a sense of proud ownership in the community.

The adult and youth programs have benefitted from Unity’s Power for Good Community Grants Program for several years. In 2023 the organization received a grant for its High School Leadership Program and Youth Advisory Council.

Over the past forty years Leadership La Porte County has created more informed residents by increasing awareness of our county’s rich history and all its diverse communities have to offer, providing opportunities for dialogue with community stakeholders to learn about complex local issues, and enhancing community pride and service.

Unity Foundation of La Porte County invites Michigan City area educators to apply for grants to make learning and teaching more fun and impactful. Unity Foundation manages three grant programs established by caring donors who believed in teachers as the critical factor for learning. Together the programs have invested in more than 1,000 educators at Michigan City public and private schools for projects of their own design since the mid-1990s.

These grants of $400 to $500 each aim to support teachers as they find innovative ways to make learning possible for students. Teachers are invited to complete an application at uflc.net/grants/teacher-grants for projects to be implemented during the 2024-2025 academic year. The application deadline is September 13, 2024.

The Michigan City Education Foundation (MCEF) makes grants of up to $500 for teachers at public and parochial K-8 schools in Michigan City. Teachers may use their grants for hands-on or virtual activities in any academic area or life skills. In 1994 the Michigan City Chamber of Commerce, Mary Lou Linnen and Bud and June Ruby founded MCEF to empower educators.

The Barbara A. Carmen Memorial Endowment Fund is dedicated to the memory of Barbara A. Carmen, a former Michigan City kindergarten and first grade teacher in both the public and parochial schools. The Carmen fund makes grants of up to $400 for items that will enrich curriculum or enhance a teacher’s ability to meet student needs.

Both programs accept proposals from educators at the following schools: Barker Middle School, Coolspring Elementary, Edgewood Elementary, Joy Elementary, Knapp Elementary, Krueger Middle School, Lake Hills STEM Magnet Elementary, Marsh Elementary, Notre Dame Catholic School, Pine Fine Arts Magnet Elementary, Queen of All Saints Catholic School, Springfield Elementary and St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic School.

The Teacher Innovation Fund is a small grant program for Michigan City High School and La Porte County Career and Technical Education/A.K. Smith Career Center teachers and professionals. It is designed to support educational professionals as they strive to reach their students. Dr. Barbara Eason-Watkins and former Michigan City Mayor Chuck Oberlie provided the idea and the seed money from their own personal funds. Grants can be used to purchase equipment, supplies, tools for special programs or for ideas to enrich curriculum and enhance each professional’s ability to meet his or her students’ needs. Each grant applicant may request up to $400.

“Unity Grants are wonderful!” said Katie Haughtington, Marsh Elementary second grade teacher and 2023-2024 MCEF grant recipient. “It’s impressive that grants have been given for so long due to the generosity of so many people. Teachers have come to rely on this grant as a way to bring hands-on learning and excitement to students each year. Applying for the grant is simple and straight forward.”

LA PORTE COUNTY, IN — The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship application is now available on the Unity Foundation of La Porte County website, uflc.net. Applications must be completed and submitted by 11:59 p.m. on September 11, 2024, to be considered.

The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program (LECSP), administered statewide by Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and locally in La Porte County by Unity Foundation will provide scholarships to two La Porte County students. LECSP scholarships may be used for otherwise unreimbursed full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year.  The special allocation may cover the costs for required books and required equipment for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.

To be eligible, students must: be a resident of La Porte County; graduate by June 30, 2025, from an accredited high school that serves La Porte County; intend to pursue a full-time baccalaureate course of study at an eligible college or university in Indiana; have a GPA (unweighted) of at least 3.75 as of the beginning of their senior year of high school and submit a complete online application at uflc.net/scholarships/lilly by the deadline.

Applications will be evaluated based on academic achievement, demonstrated service to others, leadership ability, commitment and motivation to succeed, and to a lesser extent, financial need. A committee comprised of volunteers from throughout the county will interview finalists before recommending two students to the Independent Colleges of Indiana, who make the final selection. Scholarship recipients will be notified in December.

Since 1998, 74 La Porte County students and their families have benefitted from this generous scholarship program, totaling more than $6 million. “We are proud of the academic and professional success of all our Lilly Endowment Community Scholars. We are especially proud of those who have returned to the area as adults and are now giving back to La Porte County in a variety of ways,” said Maggi Spartz, Unity Foundation President.

Since 1992, Unity Foundation of La Porte County has served donors, nonprofits and local communities. As La Porte County’s community foundation, it manages $45 million in assets, administers more than 350 charitable funds, and has distributed more than $25 million through direct grants and scholarships. Unity Foundation’s mission is to strengthen La Porte County now and forever by building permanent endowments; providing leadership; offering philanthropic vehicles for everyone; and being a catalyst for social and economic vitality.  Lilly Endowment Inc. is an Indianapolis-based, private philanthropic foundation created in 1937 by J.K. Lilly Sr. and his sons Eli and J.K. Jr. through gifts of stock in their pharmaceutical business, Eli Lilly and Company. Although the gifts of stock remain a financial bedrock of the Endowment, it is a separate entity from the company, with a distinct governing board, staff and location. In keeping with the founders’ wishes, the Endowment supports the causes of community development, education and religion. The Endowment funds significant programs throughout the United States, especially in the field of religion. However, it maintains a special commitment to its founders’ hometown, Indianapolis, and home state, Indiana.

Since 1997, Independent Colleges of Indiana has administered the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program statewide with funding provided by Lilly Endowment Inc. Founded in 1948, ICI serves as the collective voice for the state’s 29 private, nonprofit colleges and universities. ICI institutions employ over 22,000 Hoosiers and generate a total local economic impact of over $5 billion annually. Students at ICI colleges have Indiana’s highest four-year, on-time graduation rates, and ICI institutions produce 30 percent of Indiana’s bachelor’s degrees while enrolling 20 percent of its undergraduates.

LA PORTE COUNTY, IN — Unity Foundation of La Porte County is awarding nearly $350,000 in scholarships to 148 students for the 2024-2025 academic year. The recipients are attending 48 colleges and universities across the United States. Since 1992, Unity has awarded approximately $4 million from sixty scholarship funds to help area students advance their education.

Lauren Varga, Unity Foundation Marketing & Program Manager, said, “Unity Foundation is honored to administer this program and support local students each year. Beyond providing financial assistance, receiving these awards is proof to the recipients that their community is behind them as they pursue their academic goals.”

A virtual scholarship presentation recognizing this year’s recipients and the donors who make the awards possible is available on the Unity website, uflc.net, YouTube channel and Facebook page.

“Unity loves investing in our students! We are grateful for the visionary donors who provide perpetual support for La Porte County students, reducing families’ tuition bills and student debt obligations,” said Maggi Spartz, Unity Foundation President. “We hope that one day the recipients will pay forward this kindness and help support future generations of local students.”

Students may apply for scholarships for the 2025-2026 academic year beginning in January 2025. High school seniors, non-traditional or returning students, as well as those pursuing certificates or undergraduate, graduate or doctoral degrees are encouraged to visit uflc.net to learn more about the opportunities available.

LA PORTE COUNTY, IN — In honor of Teacher Appreciation Day, Unity Foundation of La Porte County surprised four local teachers with classroom grants. Unity Foundation invited the public to submit nominations by sharing what makes the teacher special. Of the many nominations received, four were randomly selected. Their schools will each receive a $250 grant from the Random Acts of Kindness Fund of Unity Foundation for the teachers to use for items for their classrooms or for creative projects to enhance learning.

“Unity Foundation has a long history of supporting students and teachers. In honor of Teacher Appreciation Day, we are thrilled to celebrate these four teachers for the impact they have on their students every day. The nominations were terrific, and we wish to thank all La Porte County teachers for everything they do throughout the year,” said Shannon Walker, Unity Foundation Vice President.

The following teachers and their schools appear below along with the information shared by their nominators.

Melissa Coffeen, Kesling Intermediate (La Porte)
“She teaches the mild program for 5th and 6th grade. These kids need so much encouragement and she provides it. She makes sure she has everything in her room for them. Snacks, games, and drinks. She makes sure that she teaches their grade standards at their level. She is their cheerleader.”

Kyle McCallum, South Central
“Kyle is an absolute amazing teacher! He goes over and beyond to teach his students the importance of the earth’s land. He also packs food bags for underprivileged children every week to be sent home on the weekends. He is the real deal of caring for our children.”

Dan Olson, La Porte High School
“He’s funny. The kids love him. He uses poker to teach statistics. It’s their favorite day of the year. Statistics!”

Josie Southworth, Joy Elementary (Michigan City)
“She has gone beyond the duties required by her job to care for her children. She has shown compassion for not only their academic growth but also their mental and emotional growth and well being. She is awesome and it has been an honor to have her as my child’s teacher.”
