One LaPorte County family experienced an apartment fire that left their home unlivable. They did not have insurance or a place to stay, so the Red Cross immediately provided financial assistance for a hotel stay and basic needs, such as food. In addition, the Red Cross provided several referrals for permanent housing, but since they were on a fixed income, housing options were limited. The Red Cross provided supplemental housing assistance to help the family pay for temporary housing until they were able to get their next paycheck and pay the first month’s rent for permanent housing.
