Simple & easy ways to get involved
Here at Unity Foundation we know that there is more to giving back than just writing a check. Do you know all your options when it comes to making a difference right here in your own community?
We’ve compiled a list of six different ways you can help. We challenge you to try something you maybe haven’t done before!
1) DONATE MONEY
Donating money is the easiest and often most practiced form of philanthropy. It’s so easy to write a check, empty the piggy bank, or click the “Donate Now” button. But did you know that there are ways to strategize and plan your giving to make sure it makes the biggest possible impact? Click here to learn more!
2) DONATE TIME
Looking for something to do Tuesday evenings? Or maybe Saturday afternoons? How about Monday nights? Volunteering time at local organizations is one of the most rewarding ways to get involved. If you’re interesting in learning about volunteer opportunities in La Porte County, check out the the Regional Volunteer Center’s listing here.
3) DONATE RESOURCES
Is your cupboard over-flowing with canned goods? Don’t know what to do with that winter coat that just doesn’t fit anymore? Can’t decide what to do with the extra building materials from your home renovation? Many organizations will happily take in-kind donations. To find out whether or not an organization can accept your gift, call to inquire in advance.
4) DONATE KNOWLEDGE
Do you have a special talent or knowledge base that can be shared with others? Often organizations look to fill voluntary positions that require specific experience. This can include: special event planning, fundraising, and board member positions.
5) BECOME AN AMBASSADOR
Did you know that you don’t have to work for an organization to be an ambassador for it? Word-of-mouth is one of the most influential forms of marketing. The referrals of friends, family, and community members are sometimes essential for some organizations. Be informed, help raise awareness, and advocate your favorite causes in appropriate situations.
6) STAY AWARE
One of the easiest ways to get involved is to simply make sure that you stay up-to-date on the issues in your community. Being aware of the important issues in your own back yard makes you an important asset. You can do this by reading the newspaper, listening to local radio, attending public meetings, picking up brochures while running errands, and following local organizations on Facebook and other social media outlets.
