This award honors the spirit, tenacity, and zeal of Jan Nona, an ordinary senior citizen who was inspired to act on behalf of her neighbors. Upon the discovery that the local shallow aquifer, which was the source of drinking water for the Town of Pines, had been poisoned by coal combustion waste, she worked relentlessly to help her neighbors. She inspired other residents to join her and demanded accountability by local, state and federal officials. The result was voluntary funding to provide most homeowners with municipal water from nearby Michigan City..
The Jan Nona Environmental Stewardship Award is granted annually to a resident of La Porte or Porter County who has demonstrated success in moving beyond ordinary citizenship to activist in the area of environmental protection.
