Fund Story
Homeward Bound, Inc. is a 501 c 3 (4/2017) incorporated in the State of Indiana (10/2016) with our “office” located in Michigan City. Our mission is to develop a community of affordable housing in LaPorte County for those living in poverty and/or in transitional situations.
Homeward Bound Board members have been addressing the issue of homelessness in a variety of ways since 2013. Together with agencies within La Porte County, we assisted in the development of a resource center to assist the homeless. Located in Michigan City, the center provides lockers, laundry facilities, clothing, internet access and hardware, counseling and case management in an effort to return those in transition to permanent housing. The transition to housing is not an easy road as even with a permanent job many living in transition could not afford the required rental and security deposits. To make needed improvements in this situation a “permanent” overnight shelter solution was developed, and Homeward Bound provided substantial financial support for this project.
In May of 2021 Homeward Bound secured property in Michigan City, receiving the zoning changes and approvals from the city to build our community of homes in January 2022. Homeward Bound is developing the Karwick Project as a Cooperative Community made available to veterans, single moms, seniors, disabled and others each of whom are either living in transition or on the brink of losing their homes. Residents will have a limited ownership in the community. The entire project is projected to cost over $2.5 million. Homes will have 1-2 bedrooms, a full kitchen, dining and living areas and a front porch. Several homes will be fully ADA compliant. The community will have gardens, gathering areas for the residents and a center for community activities.
So now as we move forward in this effort we are asking for your support. Thank you.
