Homeward Bound, Inc. Endowment Fund

The Homeward Bound, Inc. Endowment Fund was created in 2019 to support their mission to provide a financial hand up to people moving out of homelessness or those at risk of becoming homeless.

Fund Story

As early as 2013, Leigh Coburn, our founder, began volunteering his time with an organization named the Home Team of LaPorte County. Comprised of roughly thirty agencies, their meetings provided a vehicle for the discussion of issues regarding poverty and homelessness.  Through those discussions Leigh identified that an important component was missing.  To prevent and reduce homelessness affordable housing within LaPorte County was needed.  Leigh begin to discuss this issue by visiting many churches and service organizations within our community.  During those meetings testimonials were provided by people who had succumbed to homelessness. They shared the struggles they faced as they worked to regain a place to live while restoring their lives.  During this period Leigh established a relationship with Citizens Concerned for the Homeless (CCH). Through that relationship he developed an appreciation of the barriers facing the homeless within our community. Leigh led fundraising efforts to build community awareness and with his co-founder, John Vander Wagen, helped raise over $40,000 for the agencies participating in these events.  However, Leigh and John realized more needed to be done.

In 2016 Homeward Bound, Inc (HBI) was formed by incorporating our name within Indiana as a non-profit charity whose pre-eminent goal was to establish a community of affordable homes for the homeless and those living in poverty.  In early 2017 Homeward Bound Inc. received its designation letter from the Internal Revenue Service granting our 501 C-3 status as a public charity.  We were excited. On several occasions HBI was given the opportunity to acquire land. We thought we were on our way!  Unfortunately, zoning, wetland evaluations and “Not in My Backyard” issues have to date prevented us from attaining that first piece of property but we have continued to move forward in faith.

Finding ourselves funded by donations and supported by individuals like you but without the property needed to attain our objective, we re-examined our priorities and asked ourselves a question. “How can we help our communities, today?” The answer was simple.  Let’s use our gifts in other ways! As CCH works daily to remove the barriers individuals face while working their way out of homelessness HBI could provide the financial assistance needed to remove their final barrier.  We could help by paying the first month’s rent to the agencies providing housing to the CCH clients.  We decided to partner with CCH to help their clients take the final step out of homelessness by helping to provide a permanent home. This fund will insure rental funding over many years through our personal commitment to it as HBI’s Board of Directors and your on-going commitment of financial support.
