Unity Foundation of La Porte County honors the life and legacy of Daniel E. Lewis, one of our founding board members and a guiding force in our early years and beyond.
Dan was among those who recognized the benefits of starting a community foundation in La Porte County and was instrumental in forming Unity in 1992. He served faithfully on Unity’s Board of Directors and Executive Committee until 2015, generously sharing his legal expertise, asking thoughtful questions, and lightening conversations with well-timed humor and relevant, memorable stories.
His guidance to others—showing them how they could be remembered through the Unity Foundation—was critical to Unity’s early growth.
“How many of us can remember the names of our great-great-grandfathers? I have a way to assure your great-great-grandchildren will remember…The Unity Foundation!”- Daniel E. Lewis
Dan loved teaching people about the joys of philanthropy, and his vision continues to shape our mission today. His contributions live on through his family, his church, and the Unity Foundation. We are deeply grateful for Dan’s leadership, wisdom, and heart for community. His legacy of generosity and vision for a stronger La Porte County will continue to inspire generations.
Dan is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn, three daughters, and seven grandchildren. He will be remembered as a man of deep faith, a dedicated family man, and a community leader whose kindness and generosity touched many lives. You can read Daniel’s full obituary here.
